Housing

Welcome to housing

The Housing Service today is very different from the service that existed before the housing stock transfer in February 2004.  Today the Housing Service is focused on the strategic issues and enabling.  Our role is to work with a variety of organisations and customers to tackle a range of housing related issues.  We aim to provide leadership and act as champions for housing concerns on behalf of the community.  Sometime this will mean taking a direct role; and at other times we will act as a catalyst, enabling others to deliver.

The Housing Service consists of three sections, which complement each other and work towards the common goal of “good quality affordable homes for all”.  Housing today is a progressive discipline.  Government and the profession encourage and promote innovation and change.  Consequently we have to be ready to adapt the way in which we work, to ensure that our customers benefit from the improvements we can deliver.

Some of the challenges from Government include:

  • Evolving the planning system to deliver more affordable housing
  • Preventing homelessness and reducing the number of households in temporary accommodation
  • Implementing new legislation to ensure that our private sector stock remains safe, decent and desirable.
